Troubleshooting: No Traffic

Not seeing traffic on your EFB? Here’s how to diagnose.

First: Understand the Limitations

Before troubleshooting, make sure you understand what Stratux can and can’t see:

  • 1090 MHz: Only shows ADS-B Out equipped aircraft
  • 978 MHz (TIS-B): Only works in flight, with line-of-sight to ground towers
  • TIS-B only activates when an ADS-B Out aircraft is nearby

Check the Basics

Antenna Connections

  1. Verify antennas are attached to correct ports (978 → 978, 1090 → 1090)
  2. Ensure they’re hand-tight (not loose)
  3. Inspect antenna cables for damage

EFB Connection

  1. Device connected to “stratux” WiFi?
  2. EFB app showing Stratux connected?
  3. Traffic display enabled in app?

Check Stratux Status

Connect to http://192.168.10.1 in a browser.

Traffic Tab

Shows recently received traffic. If you see targets here but not in your EFB, the problem is app configuration.

Status Page

Look for: - ES (1090) messages received — should increment with nearby ADS-B Out traffic - UAT (978) messages received — will be zero on ground, should increment in flight

On the Ground

Limited traffic is normal on the ground.

  • You’ll see 1090 MHz traffic from ADS-B Out aircraft nearby
  • 978 MHz won’t work until airborne
  • You won’t see aircraft without ADS-B Out

To test: Drive to airport with known traffic, check 1090 message counts.

In Flight But No Traffic

Check Altitude

978 MHz requires ~1,000 feet AGL for reliable ground tower reception. Below that, it’s hit or miss.

Check Location

Not all areas have good ground tower coverage. - Tower coverage map - Rural areas may have gaps - Mountains can block signals

TIS-B Limitation

Remember: TIS-B only activates around ADS-B Out aircraft. In areas without ADS-B Out traffic, you may not receive TIS-B even with good tower coverage.

SDR Issues

The Software Defined Radios (SDRs) can occasionally fail: 1. Check status page for message counts 2. If one frequency shows zero after extended flight, that SDR may need replacement 3. Replacement SDRs available at crewdogelectronics.com

EFB-Specific Issues

ForeFlight

  • Only displays traffic within ±3,500 feet of your altitude
  • Check ForeFlight’s traffic settings
  • Ensure “Devices” shows Stratux connected

Other Apps

  • Check app’s traffic filter settings
  • Ensure GDL90 protocol is enabled
  • Try reconnecting to Stratux WiFi

Antenna Problems

Weak or damaged antennas reduce range significantly.

Signs of antenna issues: - Very short detection range - One frequency works, other doesn’t - Loose antenna port

Fixes: - Tighten loose ports: Video guide - Replace damaged antennas from Crew Dog Replacement Parts
