Troubleshooting: GPS Issues

GPS problems are common and usually easy to fix.

Symptoms

  • “GPS Solution: Disconnected”
  • “Serial Port (Not communicating)”
  • GPS status shows no satellites
  • Position not updating in EFB

Quick Fixes

Ensure Sky View

The GPS receiver is under the logo side of the Stratux. That side needs clear view of the sky.

  • Logo side up (toward sky)
  • Not blocked by metal roof or canopy
  • Not in a hangar or garage

First Boot Takes Time

On first use (or after reflash), GPS needs to build a satellite catalog. This can take 10-20 minutes with clear sky view.

  • Do initial GPS lock outside
  • Leave powered on until it gets a fix
  • Subsequent boots will be much faster

“Serial Port (Not communicating)”

This means the GPS chip has lost connection — usually because it got knocked loose.

Fix: Reseat the GPS Chip

  1. Power off Stratux
  2. Remove the 6 screws (use included screwdriver)
  3. Open the case carefully
  4. Find the small square GPS module plugged into USB
  5. Push it firmly back into the USB slot
  6. Optional: Apply a small dot of hot glue to prevent future loosening
  7. Reassemble and test

Why Does This Happen?

The internal GPS chip is a small USB dongle. Bumps, drops, or shipping can jostle it loose from the USB port. It’s an easy fix once you know.

GPS Works but Accuracy is Poor

Check Antenna Position

  • GPS needs 4+ satellites for good position
  • Metal, carbon fiber canopies, or tinted windows can block signal
  • Try repositioning for better sky view

Consider External GPS

For aircraft with poor GPS reception (metal roofs, carbon fiber), an external GPS puck mounted outside works better: - External GPS from Crew Dog store - External GPS installation video

GPS Fix Drops In Flight

If GPS loses lock during flight: - Check GPS chip seating (vibration can loosen it) - Check for interference (other devices, wiring) - Ensure adequate sky view from mounting position

Checking GPS Status

Connect to Stratux WiFi and visit http://192.168.10.1

The GPS/AHRS tab shows: - GPS solution status - Number of satellites - Position accuracy - Fix quality

Healthy GPS: - 7+ satellites tracked - Position accuracy under 10m - “3D GPS Solution” status
